1 St place to visit on 2008 is Laos, 2nd is LISBON!!!! WOW!!!! CONGRATULATIONS, Lisbon!
You mite make the same question as I. Why Lisbon? What the NYT tells us, is that in Lisbon is happening a big bum on Art and new modern culture, including new design hotel such as Fontana Park Hotel or Jeronimos 8 from Alexandre de Almeida group. They also mentioned the new Berardo collection Museum just beside Belem Cultural Center where you can find one of the most big private portuguese collection of art.
Out from the arcticle, I also recomend to stay on the Liberdade Av. Heritage Hotel (2006), where Câncio Martins, an interior arquitect, well knowned internationally for his work on Buddha bar(1996) in Paris, Pacha(2004) in Marrakech, Hotel W (2004) in Montreal,Tugga (2005) in London, E-Lux(2007) in Luxembourg, Hotel Raffles (2000) in Singapour, Plein sud NY (1999) in NY made the interior decoration and rebuilded the exterior part of the building. If you want a combination between the tipical traditional house from the heart of Lisbon and the modernaty that you can drink from the taste of worldwide, this is the hotel you are looking for.
Beside this, Siza Vieira, an arquitect well-knowned on the arquictets world community (won Pritzker prize in 1992 and Wolf prize in 2001) , is also very apreciated by tourists coming to Portugal to see his work. One of his most popular work is the Pavillion of Portugal located in Parque das Nações (Nations Park) in the east part of Lisbon. This area was in 1998 the last World Exposition of the XX century. You can find here lot's of modern buildings incluing the Orient train station (Estação do Oriente), Vasco da Gama tower (torre Vasco da Gama) and the Vasco da Gama bridge.
